When In San Diego - About Barley And Sword Brewing Company
Barley & Sword Brewing is probably the closest San Diegans can get to an old world brewpub without the expensive plane ticket. At Barley & Sword they specialize in British, German, and Czech beers (Kolsch, Irish Red Ale, Scottish Ale, Pilsner, ESB) and they do them damn well. So if you are sick of IPAs and in the mood for a bitter English or a crisp pilsner or a sour goze this your place. They do keep an IPA on tap, but this is for profiling purposes and that is not what you should be drinking here.
San Diego's Barley & Sword Expands to Escondido at Former Jacked Up Brewery Location
North Park-based Barley & Sword Brewing is set to open a second location in San Diego's North County, taking over the former home of Jacked Up Brewery in Escondido.
Founded by U.S. Navy veteran Mike Howell, Barley & Sword first launched two years ago inside the CRAFT by Brewery Igniter facility in North Park and has become known for its dedication to traditional European beer styles. The new Escondido location will expand the company’s footprint from its original 1,860-square-foot space to a 6,812-square-foot property that includes a 10-barrel brewhouse, 37 barrels of fermentation space, and a kitchen-equipped tasting room. Brewing capacity is expected to grow to more than 140 barrels, significantly increasing production while maintaining the original North Park site.

Barley & Sword to present the past in the near future
“The tasting room has been redesigned to give the feel of a classic tavern. We will be incorporating elements of the history of beer across all time periods wherein we highlight the impact of beer on society,” says co-founder Mike Howell. “Unique artwork will be curated and added to the space over time to offer our patrons an enjoyable experience where they just might accidentally learn something.”
Meet Barley and Sword Brewing news article
It’s been seven months since Pariah Brewing vacated its lease-to-brew suite at North Park’s Brewery Igniter facility. That move came after the six-year-old company opted to relocate to Baltimore, where it’s since made an impact on that city’s growing beer scene. Since then, a new tenant has taken over the suite next door (GOAL. Brewing, which will be helmed by veteran brewer Derek Gallanosa and is subleasing space from former tenant, Barrio Logan-based Attitude Brewing), but Pariah’s spot has remained vacant…until now.
